What can I recycle?

Cleaning out old tech? Find out what e-waste Atlas Electronics Recycling accepts. Serving Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish. View our full accepted items list.

We have all got that one drawer (or maybe an entire closet) in our home or office. You know the one. It is stuffed with tangled cords, an old laptop from 2015, and a cellphone that hasn't turned on since the Saints won the Super Bowl.

At Atlas Electronics Recycling, we know that getting rid of old tech can be confusing. You want to do the right thing for the environment, but you aren't sure what counts as "e-waste."

Whether you are a business in Denham Springs clearing out an old server room, or a resident in Baton Rouge finally tidying up the garage, this guide will help you decide what stays and what goes.

What We Love to Recycle (The "Yes" List)

As a rule of thumb, if it has a circuit board, a plug, or holds data, there is a good chance we can recycle it! We specialize in processing high-tech waste securely and sustainably.

Here are the most common items we accept from our neighbors across Livingston Parish and the surrounding areas:

  • Televisions & Monitors: Yes, we accept them all! This includes flat screens (LED/LCD/Plasma) and older CRT (tube) TVs and monitors.
  • Computers & IT Equipment: Desktops, laptops, servers, and mainframes.
  • Mobile Devices: Cell phones, smartphones, tablets, and PDAs.
  • Office Equipment: Printers, scanners, fax machines, and copiers.
  • Networking Gear: Routers, switches, hubs, and modems.
  • Components & Parts: Circuit boards, hard drives (we destroy the data!), RAM, processors, and power supplies.
  • Cables & Accessories: Keyboards, mice, docking stations, and that giant ball of tangled power cords you have been afraid to touch.
  • Audio/Video: VCRs, DVD players, cable boxes, and satellite receivers.

If you have working equipment, it might qualify for our Tech for Tomorrow program. Instead of recycling it, we may be able to refurbish it to help students or families in need right here in our community!

What We Cannot Accept (The "No" List)

Not everything with a cord is considered "e-waste" in the recycling world. Some items contain hazards that require different handling, while others are just scrap metal or household trash.

Please do not include the following in your electronics recycling pickup:

  • Hazardous Materials: Batteries that are swollen or leaking, light bulbs (fluorescent tubes/CFLs), and bio-waste.
  • Liquids: Anything containing oil, gas, or unknown fluids.
  • Household Appliances (White Goods): We generally do not accept toasters, blenders, coffee makers, vacuums, refrigerators, or washing machines. These are often considered scrap metal or appliance waste rather than electronics.
  • Smoke Detectors & Thermostats: These often contain small amounts of radioactive material or mercury and require specialized disposal facilities.

Note: If you are unsure about a specific item, just give us a call. It is always better to ask before hauling it over!

Why Recycling Matters

When you throw electronics in the regular trash, they end up in a landfill where toxic metals like lead and mercury can leak into the soil and water. By recycling with Atlas Electronics Recycling, you are ensuring that:

  • Your Data is Safe: We prioritize secure data destruction for all hard drives and storage media.
  • Our Community Stays Clean: From Baton Rouge to Albany, we help keep our local environment free of toxins.
  • Resources are Saved: We recover valuable materials like copper, gold, and silver to be reused in new devices.
